Description
If you’re the type who’s already peeling the wrapper off a fresh set before the old one’s even gone dead, meet the EXL148. D’Addario built this set with hybrid gauges that split the difference between standard heavy strings and full-on baritone territory — perfect for “C” tuning or anyone who just wants more mass and tension under their pick hand.
These are classic XL Nickel Wound strings: round wound nickel-plated steel over a hexagonal high-carbon steel core. That hex shape isn’t just a manufacturing detail — the six edges bite into the wrap wire as it’s wound on, locking it in place so the string stays true longer instead of going dull and floppy after a few sweaty sets.
Every set comes out of D’Addario’s own custom-engineered winding machines, computer-controlled and checked wire by wire before it ever gets spun. That’s the difference between a set that intonates cleanly right out of the pack and one you’re fighting with. Made in the USA, sealed in corrosion-resistant packaging so they’re not oxidizing on a shelf before you even open them.
Gauge breakdown:
- Plain steel: .012, .016, .020
- Nickel wound: .034, .046, .060
Bright, textured, familiar round-wound feel — just scaled up for players chasing low tunings, extra sustain, or strings that can take a beating night after night.
